ADVISORY: People’s Hearing for Public Renewables

New Yorkers to Call on Hochul to Build 15GW of Renewables to Meet State’s Climate Targets, Lower Electric Bills and Create Thousands of Jobs

Tuesday, September 9, 2025 @ 6:30PM

More info

New York, New York – Governor Kathy Hochul has a choice: will she echo Trump’s energy policy or will New York lead the country and build 15 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy which will lower electric bills, cut pollution, create thousands of green union jobs and allow the state to meet its legally mandated climate targets?

Since the New York Power Authority (NYPA) refuses to hold in-person public hearings on its updated strategic plan to implement the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA), New Yorkers are holding their own to demand Hochul build 15GW of public renewables.

WHO: Organized by Public Power New York, speakers will include Senator Jabari Brisport, Assemblymember Marcela Mitaynes, Former Congressmember Jamaal Bowman, Sumaya Awad, a representative for UAW 9A and more to be announced.

WHERE: First Unitarian Church

119 Pierrepont Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201 US

WHEN: Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at 6:30pm

WHY: After a powerful, four year-long campaign, New Yorkers passed the BPRA to enable the state to lead the whole country forward on building public renewables. New York needs to build 15GW of projects to meet its 2030 climate goals of 70% renewable energy by 2030, but the Republican that Hochul appointed through a loophole to lead NYPA initially only proposed 3GW.

Because thousands of New Yorkers rose up to demand 15GW NYPA doubled its projects to 7GW, getting New York much closer to its goal. If NYPA can add almost 4GW of renewables in just six months, it can add enough to get the state to 15GW by 2030.

New Yorkers have already left over 1,500 comments on the updated strategic plan calling for 15GW of public renewables and packed two virtual hearings held by NYPA.

About Public Power NY

The Public Power NY Coalition is a statewide movement of community and advocacy organizations fighting for an environmentally sustainable energy system that’s also racially, socially, and economically just. We believe energy and a habitable planet are human rights, and that we need to avert the climate crisis by eliminating the use of fossil fuels and transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy. We aim to accomplish these goals by taking over our for-profit energy system and bringing it under public, not-for-profit, local, and democratic ownership and management.
