Public Power NY Statement on Williams Pipeline Approval

“Today Kathy Hochul proved that regardless of who she stands beside on stage, her true partner is Donald Trump, who she has worked with hand-in-hand to poison New Yorkers’ water, raise New Yorkers’ energy bills, and illegally threaten New Yorkers’ very future.

“Just days after more than a million New York City voters elected a public renewables champion on the promise of a more affordable city, the Governor has chosen to make life less affordable, and more toxic. Kathy Hochul should bring bills and pollution down by building 15 gigawatts of publicly owned renewable energy, not break climate laws to serve Trump’s anti-wallet, anti-planet agenda.”

Background: The Williams NESE Pipeline was rejected by the DEC in 2018, 2019, and 2020 due to its threat to water safety. According to National Grid, the pipeline will raise New Yorkers’ bills by nearly $100 a year.

About Public Power NY

As chronicled in the new book “Organize or Burn.” Public Power NY is a movement fighting to ensure New York effectively carries out the Build Public Renewables Act by building 15 Gigawatts of public renewables by 2030. Hailed as the first statewide Green New Deal law, BPRA was written by PPNY and passed in 2023 thanks to four years of organizing by a multiracial, multi-generational movement of climate and advocacy organizations, labor unions representing millions of New Yorkers and tens of thousands of New Yorkers who have taken action from upstate, downstate, and everywhere in between. With federal climate action off the table, BPRA has enabled NY to not just play defense against Trump, but lead the way the way FDR created NYPA to do.
