Over 2,000 New Yorkers Call on Hochul to Build 15GW of Renewables
Flood of comments on NYPA’s strategic plan come before People’s Hearing for Public Renewables in NYC next week
New York- Over 2,000 New Yorkers have submitted public comments calling on Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to build 15 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy. The comments are on NYPA’s updated strategic plan to implement the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA).
Following massive public outcry, NYPA has proposed to double the amount of renewables it builds from a paltry 3GW to 7GW, but at least 15GW of public renewables by 2030 is necessary for New York to meet the legally mandated goals of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA).
The Public Power NY Coalition released the following statement:
“New Yorkers are demanding Governor Hocuhl lower electric bills, cut pollution, create thousands of green union jobs and ensure the state meets its legally mandated climate targets and she can do that by rejecting Trump’s energy policy and instructing NYPA to build 15GW of public renewables. Governor Hochul, listen to the over 2,000 New Yorkers calling on our state to lead the nation.”
A People’s Hearing for Public Renewables will be held next week on Tuesday in New York City as NYPA refuses to hold in-person hearings after New Yorkers packed those held last winter, and one New Yorkers’ testimony going viral.
A growing series of videos from New Yorkers highlighting the importance of the fight for public renewables and Hochul’s embracement of President Trump’s energy policy are gaining popularity and helping to mobilize hundreds of comments.

About Public Power NY
Public Power NY is a movement fighting to ensure New York effectively carries out the Build Public Renewables Act by building 15 Gigawatts of public renewables by 2030. Hailed as the first statewide Green New Deal law, BPRA was written by PPNY and passed in 2023 thanks to four years of organizing by a multiracial, multi-generational movement of climate and advocacy organizations, labor unions representing millions of New Yorkers and tens of thousands of New Yorkers who have taken action from upstate, downstate, and everywhere in between. With federal climate action off the table, BPRA has enabled NY to not just play defense against Trump, but lead the way the way FDR created NYPA to do.
