NEW FUNDING allocated FOR NYPA RENEWABLES

New York, NY — The 2025-2026 New York State budget will provide new support for public renewables authorized by the Build Public Renewables Act of 2023. The budget dedicates $200 million for renewable energy development that is available to the New York Power Authority (NYPA). This funding comes after a year of aggressive organizing by public power advocates including ten town halls at CUNY campuses, multiple rallies statewide, and over 5300 comments on NYPA’s renewables plan demanding 15 gigawatts of public renewables and the full decarbonization of CUNY.

Public Power NY released the following statement:

“While this year’s budget falls drastically short of the needed investment in climate, the public power movement has clearly made an impact that the Governor could not ignore. Increased funding for public renewables will create green jobs, lower utility bills, help close super-polluting peaker plants, and increase the likelihood of meeting our legally mandated climate goals. But these priorities must be funded much more aggressively to fully achieve a just transition and create the clean energy system New Yorkers demand and deserve. NYPA should acknowledge New Yorkers’ overwhelming demand for public power and update its strategic plan to include 15 GW of public renewables by 2030.”

The Public Power NY Coalition is a statewide movement of community and advocacy organizations fighting for an environmentally sustainable energy system that’s also racially, socially, and economically just. We believe energy and a habitable planet are human rights, and that we need to avert the climate crisis by eliminating the use of fossil fuels and transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy. We aim to accomplish these goals by taking over our for-profit energy system and bringing it under public, not-for-profit, local, and democratic ownership and management.
